Tips for Getting Around in Bali In general, a rented car without a driver can be recommended only to experienced drivers. The Indonesians drive on the left-hand side, but the crucial (unwritten) rule of the road is that the larger vehicles always have priority! Many of the international car rentals firms have branches at the luxury hotels along the south coast. Local firms are plentiful and significantly cheaper, and it is often possible to negotiate a price. An international driving license is required. Before signing a rental agreement, take a test drive to check on the condition of the vehicle, especially the brakes. Motorcycle rental is popular and cheap, but be aware of the dangers. Crash helmets are compulsory and must be provided by the rental firm.In the south there are plenty of fuel stations run by the state-owned oil company Pertamina. In more remote areas, look for the sign ‘Premium’ . Try to avoid village kiosks with hand painted signs, as the quality of the fuel sold by these is sometimes dubious. |
